Behind the Print: Bedroom Floor

A child in the 1990’s, the Bedroom floor is an homage to Karen's cluttered childhood bedroom, that served as her entire world while growing up in the Scottish Isles.

Karen was originally surprised with how many people connected with the print at its first launch, as it was designed to resemble her own private world while growing up isolated on the Scottish Isles. Reflecting on when she initially drew the print, she now views her childhood bedroom as where her imagination began to grow. As a result of being a child growing up outside of city influence, Karen was left with spaces of boring, empty time and had to get creative with how to occupy herself. Her bedroom floor was where she housed all of these activities, creating a flat-lay of her favourite things. Her most beloved reference in the design is a nod to her three guinea pigs-- Katie, Tommy and Dennis -- and her hamster Monty, her constant childhood companions.

The result: a snapshot of a very particular era, where mornings were spent watching Ant and Dec and all of your money was spent at the Body Shop. Slinkies, tamagotchi and pez dispensers contribute to a small part of the clutter. Reflecting on the print and why she wants to see it return for her 10 Year Anniversary, she is nostalgic for that time before the internet and when, looking at the world through the lens of her daughter, children were allowed to have a normal childhood. With your entire world being confined to the walls of a bedroom, everything seems simpler allowing for the parameters to develop imagination – a key element of the brand today.
